Information about Sainsbury Institute

SISJAC is an institution established in 1999 by Sir Robert and Lady Sainsbury to foster appreciation and awareness of Japanese arts and cultures. As it enters its second decade, the institute has developed a renewed mission statement that not only upholds the donors’ aspirations and aligns with their initial vision, but also seeks to broaden its scholarly perspectives.

 

Sainsbury Institute Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellowships Benefits

The Sainsbury Institute Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellowships come with numerous benefits. The one-year Fellowship is set to commence in September 2023 and has a value of £24,000. However, if you opt for the six-month Fellowship, kindly state your preferred start date in your application, as it may be subject to negotiation.

The six-month Fellowship carries a value of £12,000. While both options are available, one-year Fellowships are preferred.

 

Qualification Requirements for Sainsbury Institute Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellowships

To be eligible for the Sainsbury Institute Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellowships, applicants must have a PhD in any field of Japanese culture, with preference given to those working in visual studies, such as history of art, cultural heritage, archaeology, architecture, film studies, and digital humanities.

Additionally, fellows should have excellent spoken and written English skills.

 

Instructions on Applying for Sainsbury Institute Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellowships

To start your application for the Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellowship, please request for the application form by sending an email. Once you have completed the application form, please email it to [email protected]. Along with the application form, please also provide:

  • Curriculum Vitae (including the expected date of PhD conferment, if not yet conferred)
  • Writing sample (such as a published article or a core chapter of the PhD) All application materials must be in English.

Furthermore, two letters of reference should be submitted by email or mail to arrive on or before the application deadline. If sent by mail, the letters should be signed and sealed, and directly mailed by the referee to the Sainsbury Institute, 64 The Close, Norwich, NR1 4DH, UK.
