Applying for University of Bonn SDG Fellowship Program

The University of Bonn SDG Fellowship Program is seeking scholars primarily from Africa, Latin America, and South/East Asia who wish to conduct research on topics related to Sustainable Development Goals.

Fellowships are available for periods ranging from 3-12 months, and successful applicants will receive scholarships, travel allowances, research funding, and assistance for any accompanying family members. The program is currently accepting applications from interested candidates until April.

Fellowship Program Overview

The University of Bonn is dedicated to forging strong collaborations with academic institutions and research centers across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) poses significant challenges to many nations in these regions, as evidenced by the SDG index.

In response to this, the university has established a fellowship program to invite international postdoctoral fellows to participate in joint research projects focused on the SDGs. The program aims to nurture talented researchers, establish and strengthen networks, and enhance research outcomes. Tenured faculty (professors) at the University of Bonn may invite applicants to participate in this program.

  • A monthly scholarship of €3,000.
  • Additional funds for accompanying family members: up to €300 for a spouse and €250 per child.
  • A research expense allowance of up to €500 per month.

Academic Level and Subject Area

The fellowship is open to PhD scholars who are researching a topic that supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined in the United Nations’ Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.

Location

The fellowship program will take place at the University of Bonn in Germany.

Who Can Apply?

Candidates must satisfy the following conditions to be eligible for the University of Bonn SDG Fellowship:

  • Postdoctoral researchers (with non-German nationality) are invited by a professor at the University of Bonn to work on a joint research project.
  • The fellow must have a long-term association (research or teaching) at a university or research institution in the above-mentioned regions beyond their fellowship and have demonstrated expertise in an area of research from the SDGs thematic spectrum.

Step to Apply

To apply for the University of Bonn SDG Fellowship, a full-time professor at the University of Bonn must submit the following documents along with the fellow’s CV and online form:

  • Access online form here
  • A project description in PDF format with a maximum of 8 pages.
  • The project description should outline the research project work and be written for a multidisciplinary audience. It should also describe the reasons for the fellow’s invitation and how their activities will contribute to research and teaching at the University of Bonn.
  • The project description should include an overview of the collaboration between the applicant and the fellow so far, as well as an outline of the integration of the fellow into the host institute (workplace, participation in teaching and research activities).
  • The project description should also outline a plan for the outcome of the stay and future collaboration.
  • Finally, a financing plan using the provided Excel file (Download here) should be included.
