Former KMA Presiding Member Applauds Alan Kyerematen’s Decision to Downsize Government.

Abraham Boadi, a member of the ruling NPP and a former presiding member of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, has praised former Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyerematen, for his decision to downsize the number of government appointees if given the opportunity to lead the country. Boadi believes that the Ministries of Transport and Aviation are unnecessary and a waste of resources.

The size of the Akufo-Addo government has been criticized by some civil society groups and political analysts for being too large. However, calls for the President to downsize his ministers have gone unheeded.

In a recent speech declaring his intention to lead the NPP, former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen stated that he plans to reduce the size of the government if he becomes the flagbearer and subsequently the President.

Abraham Boadi welcomes this plan, stating that it is a waste of scarce resources to have two ministries performing the same function. The NDC also believes that the duplicity of functions makes the government unproductive.

The opposition NDC argues that Kyerematen’s comment vindicates the alleged abuse of power by the Akufo-Addo administration. The party expects President Akufo-Addo to run a lean government in the current economic hardship. According to the party, Kyerematen’s comment is a clear indication that the NPP has failed Ghanaians.

The Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the NDC, Abass Nuruden, stated that Kyerematen, who sat as a cabinet member, has no basis to lament over the size of the government.
