Chris Hughton to Face First Challenge as Black Stars Head Coach in March 2023 AFCON Qualifiers

Chris Hughton has been officially confirmed as the new head coach for the Black Stars by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), replacing Otto Addo after the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Hughton, who previously served as the team’s technical advisor, will lead the team for the first time in March during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifications.

The 64-year-old brings a wealth of experience to the role, having managed several clubs including Birmingham City, Norwich City, and Brighton and Hove Albion, as well as serving as assistant manager for Ireland and Tottenham Hotspur.

The GFA believes Hughton’s experience and expertise will help the Black Stars reach their full potential. A GFA spokesperson said, “Continuity was a major factor in the appointment of Chris Hughton as the new coach. The decision to appoint Hughton was aimed at maintaining stability and a sense of familiarity within the team.”

Chris Hughton’s First Challenge

The Black Stars will face Angola in their first test under Hughton’s leadership, in a double-header set to take place in March as part of the 2023 AFCON qualifications. One game will be played in Cape Coast, while the other will be in Luanda.

The GFA expressed confidence in Hughton’s ability to lead the team smoothly, given his knowledge of the team and their strengths and weaknesses, as well as his tactical expertise.

Moreover, Hughton was born in the UK but has Ghanaian heritage, which gives him a strong understanding of the country and its football culture. As Hughton begins his journey as the new head coach of the Black Stars, both the GFA and the fans are looking forward to seeing what he brings to the table.
