About Job

As the Output 1 Lead, you will play a pivotal role in driving the success of all Output 1 activities. This includes developing and distributing relevant materials, providing training to educators, facilitating school leadership and community support, and overseeing monitoring and evaluation. Reporting to the Deputy Team Lead, you will provide technical and managerial guidance to ensure the timely and high-quality delivery of project outcomes. This entails collaborating closely with DAI, subcontractors, government stakeholders, and project staff. Furthermore, you will be responsible for providing the donor with regular updates and requested information. Job Functions, Responsibilities, and Duties

As the Output 1 Lead, you will be responsible for overseeing all Output 1 activities, including material development and distribution, in-service and pre-service training, school leadership and community support, and monitoring and evaluation. You will report directly to the Deputy Team Lead and will work closely with the project prime, FHI 360, and other key stakeholders.

Your primary role will be to coordinate with FHI 360 and stakeholders to develop project designs and work plans. You will lead the annual work planning for Output 1 of the project and ensure timely completion of deliverables in the annual work plan by working closely with the Education Coordinator, MEL Coordinator, State Team Leads, and other key staff.

As part of your role, you will oversee administrative and finance staff to develop and monitor the budget and work plan for Output 1. You will also communicate regularly with FHI 360 HQ for technical inputs and management support and provide updates to HQ as requested.

In addition to this, you will liaise with project subcontractors on their project components and maintain their accountability for timely, high-quality deliverables. You will be required to provide consistent reports to the prime organization and the donor as requested.

Another important aspect of your role will be to maintain strong relationships with government partners at the local, state, and federal levels. This will include conducting one-on-one meetings, project updates, study tours, symposia, and other activities with key stakeholders to ensure broad involvement and local ownership of the project.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Facilitate the creation of technical working groups with local stakeholders and project staff.
  • Supervise staff and stakeholders to improve capacity, accountability, and equity in State Colleges of Education in Kano, Kaduna, and Jigawa. Supervise project staff and stakeholders to enhance the system for in-service training in Kano, Kaduna, and Jigawa.
  • Supervise staff and stakeholders to reinforce school leadership through School-Based Management Committees and Head Teacher capacity building.
  • Supervise the implementation of school report cards as a means of school accountability and reporting.
  • Supervise staff and stakeholders to develop systems for increasing teacher attendance and time on task.
  • Supervise staff and stakeholders to mobilize communities to enhance demand for quality education. Supervise staff and stakeholders to develop standardized learning assessments at the school level.
  • Supervise staff and stakeholders to effectively collect, aggregate, visualize, and use assessment data for decision-making.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must possess an Advanced Degree in Education, with a specialization in early grade reading, literacy, language acquisition, or a related field. Candidates must also have 5-7 years of experience in education reform, with a focus on primary education sector work in language acquisition and/or child literacy or reading, especially in Hausa Language. Certification as a reading/literacy specialist is preferred.

The ideal candidate must possess demonstrated project leadership skills, and experience leading education projects in Nigeria is strongly preferred. They must also have proven expertise in mother tongue (L1), early grade reading instruction and/or assessment and reading material development, preferably in Hausa Language. Significant experience in developing and producing student reading materials, workbooks, trainers’ and teachers’ guides, and instructional materials to improve early grade reading is also required.

Additionally, the candidate must possess the ability to coordinate reading interventions, set realistic priorities, and plan for the successful implementation of activities. Strong leadership qualities and facilitation skills, as well as experience in working with teachers to improve practice, are a must. Demonstrable knowledge of research-based best practices in content-area reading skills and strategies and literacy instruction, as well as experience in modeling teaching, observing teachers, and providing non-judgmental feedback, are also essential.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The ideal candidate must have knowledge of reading and literacy programs in Nigeria, sensitivity to cultural differences, and an understanding of the political and ethical issues surrounding formative learning processes. Proficient writing and verbal communication skills are necessary, and the ability to work well with others and to develop and maintain good working relationships with staff and other partners is critical. The candidate must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, especially in terms of reporting, and relevant computer software and internet skills (at a minimum, the standard applications in MS Office and Excel). The candidate must be able to read, write and speak fluent English and Hausa language, and have the ability to travel within Nigeria a minimum of 50%.
