By | 16 March 2023

Outstanding academics are encouraged to submit proposals for the IIAS Fellowships for Asian Studies, which are intended for independent projects in the humanities or social sciences. The IIAS Fellowships (and IIAS/FMSH) are alternate names for this.

A Gonda fellowship is also open to indologists. In accordance with agreements with Dutch universities, foreign ministries, and financial agencies for the Chair of Taiwan Studies, the IIAS also supports professorial fellowships.

Outstanding Asian and international scholars are welcome to apply for a fellowship at IIAS. Candidates may also submit an application for an additional joint IIAS/FMSH fellowship, which would cover an additional two months of research at the FMSH in Paris.

Benefits of the Scholarship

The Leiden University Faculty of Humanities, the Taiwanese Ministry of Education, and IIAS will cover the costs of one research workshop, including one participant’s round-trip air travel (direct flights only).

During their tenure in Leiden, the Professorial Fellow may invite one master’s or PhD student from their home institution to come to the city for a temporary study or exchange program.

Before applying for the IIAS Fellowships, candidates should take the following factors into account:

Outstanding scholars from all around the world are invited to apply for the position of associated fellow, which will allow them to work on a crucial area of social science and humanities study in Asian studies. Interests in multiple fields are encouraged.
