Grist Fellowship Program in USA

The Grist Fellowship Program invites applications from promising journalists who want to grow by taking on the world of environmental knowledge in the US. The production is a paid opportunity to develop your skills at a national media center and gain a deeper understanding of local issues. Interested participants are encouraged to apply before the deadline.

Fellowship Details

The experience is designed to give beginning journalists, with a passion for environmental issues, the experience to succeed in climate and environmental media. The program provides real-world experience in a fast-paced news network, training in a variety of critical skills for the journalism profession, and exposure to leading contemporary thinkers and visionaries of our time.

After a year of working full-time at Grist and gaining important skills in environmental journalism, interns went on to places like The Atlantic, Capital B, The Verge, Wirecutter, Outside, Atlas Obscura, Greentech Media and, of course, , Grist.

The Grist Fellowship Program is for early-career journalists in the fields of environmental and climate journalism and media.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Grist Fellowship in USA, candidates must meet the following conditions:

  • Open to young early-career journalists who have demonstrated interest in environmental and climate journalism and media.
  • Fellows must have a U.S. address and be eligible to work in the U.S. That being said, they can work remotely from a location of their choosing, provided they can match Grist’s core working hours. Depending on COVID-19 safety guidelines, fellows may also have the option of working in Grist’s Seattle headquarters or New York office space. Fellows are not required to relocate and remote work is always an option for fellows.
  • Candidates can apply for multiple fellowships (Environmental Justice, Indigenous Affairs, News & Politics, Food & Agriculture, Climate Solutions and/or Data Fellow) in a given cycle as long as they are qualified for each position.
  • Applications from underrepresented backgrounds are highly encouraged.
