Application Opened for Boren Awards for International Study Abroad 2023

The Boren Awards for International Study in the U.S. is currently accepting applications from exceptional and enthusiastic candidates. These scholarships are aimed at providing opportunities for undergraduate students to study abroad.

For U.S. undergraduate students who are interested in studying abroad in regions that are underrepresented in study abroad and are critical to U.S. interests, the Boren Scholarships offer up to $25,000 in financial support.

 

About Boren Award for International Study Abroad

The Boren Awards for International Study Abroad are scholarships and fellowships that prioritize geographic areas, languages, and fields of study that are considered vital to U.S. national security. The National Security Education Program (NSEP) provides funding for these awards.

Applicants must articulate how their study abroad programs or overseas projects, along with their future academic and career objectives, will contribute to U.S. national security in a broad sense. The scholarships provide up to $25,000 and are available for international undergraduate students.

The Institute of International Education (IIE) in the United States hosts the program, and several awards are given out.

 

Qualification Requirements

To qualify for Boren Awards for International Study Abroad, prospective applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED certificate
  • Plan to study in a foreign country that is not their home country
  • Boren Scholarship applicants must be currently enrolled in an associate’s or bachelor’s degree program within the United States that is accredited by a body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education when applying
  • They must maintain enrollment in an undergraduate degree program throughout the scholarship period and may not graduate until it is finished
  • Boren Scholars and Fellows have the opportunity to study in various regions across the globe, such as Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

  • Boren Awards offer financial support to U.S. students to undertake an immersive language and cultural study program abroad. Applicants can either opt for a Regional Flagship Language Initiative or design their own study program, depending on their eligibility criteria.
