ARES Scholarships in Belgium for developing countries are open to Master’s degree holders who are looking for an opportunity to develop their skills for the development of their country. The program is fully funded to cover living and tuition costs. Interested students should submit their applications before the deadline.

Program Details

Each year, the Academy of Research and Higher Education (ARES) awards an average of 150 scholarships within the framework of the Master’s Degree and 70 scholarships within the framework of internships to nationals of other countries.

Within the framework of the Belgian development cooperation policy, the Belgian Higher Education Institutions are responsible for the preparation of postgraduate programs that are specifically oriented towards young professionals from developing countries.

Scholarships for Masters and Training Courses offer the student the opportunity to follow a one-year specialized Master’s program or a 4-6 month advanced training course within higher education in Belgium.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be considered eligible for ARES Scholarships in Belgium for Developing Countries, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Applicants must be residing and working in their own country at the time of application
  • Be under the age of 40 for courses and under 45 for training periods as at the start of the training
  • Hold a diploma comparable to a diploma of the second cycle of Belgian University education
  • Demonstrate relevant professional experience in an ARES partner country of at least two years after completing second cycle (advanced bachelors) or three years after the end of studies when the candidate holds a post-graduate diploma (advanced masters) from an industrialized country.
  • Have good knowledge of written and spoken French Language. This helps the candidate to easily integrate and participate in daily life in Belgium.
  • Apply for a single training course.

Application Procedure:

Eligible candidates for ARES Belgium Government Scholarship should submit an application to ARES via the GIRAF platform:

  • You must first ensure that you have an active GIRAF account.
    • You can create an online account here. This account will be validated (within a few hours to a few days) and you will receive a confirmation mail to create a password.
  • Once logged into your GIRAF account, you can access the application form via the Competitive calls tab of your GIRAF profile. Please note that you must only click once on the “International masters training applications” button. You will then find your form in the My tasks table of the Competitive calls.
  • You can complete your form several times, as long as you use the “Save and edit later” option. You will find your form each time in the My Tasks table of the Competitive calls tab in GIRAF.
  • As soon as you click on “Submit my application”, your application is sent to ARES and you can no longer modify it. You can still consult it in the My submitted files table.
