Update On the Closure of Non-Performing Schools in Ghana by GES and MoE

Minister of Education warns non-performing schools in Ghana of possible closure and urges Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) and Principals of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Institutions to take action to improve educational outcomes.

The Minister suggests that schools with a consistent zero to ten percent pass rate should implement intervention programs to ensure that their students have opportunities for further studies. He believes that closing non-performing schools would help save the government from incurring huge financial losses.

Dr. Adutwum made the call during the annual meeting with CHASS and TVET institutions in Kumasi over the weekend. The Minister also acknowledged the significant role played by Heads of Schools in the transformation of education in the country and pledged to continue providing the necessary resources to aid their efforts.

The Deputy Minister for Education, Ms. Gifty Twum-Ampofo, MP, in charge of TVET, also spoke at the meeting and reminded the Principals of their responsibility to equip students for the job market. She encouraged them to focus on enhancing their capacity through relevant courses and books to improve the quality of training they provide for their students. She also stressed that schools must pass through them and not the students passing through the school.

Affected students of non-performing schools will be redistributed to nearby schools to continue their education and become relevant to the nation. The meeting had two batches, with all Senior High School Heads attending on Saturday and Principals of TVET institutions attending on Sunday.

The meeting was an annual event held to share the current state of education in the country, discuss new developments in the sector, and answer questions on issues affecting them.

Presentations were made by the leadership of the Ghana Education Service (GES), National Education Leadership Institute (NELI), Free Senior High School Secretariat, Funds and Procurement Management Unit (FPMU), and the Ghana TVET Service.
