Ghana’s capital city of Accra is home to the University of Ghana. Of the thirteen national public universities in Ghana, it is the oldest and biggest.
The University College of the Gold Coast was founded in 1948 in the former British colony of the Gold Coast. It used to be a college connected to the University of London, which was in charge of overseeing its academic programs and awarding degrees.
Once Ghana gained its independence in 1957, the college was renamed the University College of Ghana.
It changed its name once more to the University of Ghana in 1961 after receiving full university status.
On the western slope of the Accra Legon hills, in northeastern Accra, is where you’ll find the University of Ghana. There are more than 40,000 pupils enrolled.
