The University of Ghana is a public research university in Accra, Ghana. It is the oldest and largest of Ghana’s thirteen national public universities.
The college was renamed the University College of Ghana after Ghana gained independence in 1957. When it was granted full university status in 1961, it changed its name once more to the University of Ghana.
The University of Ghana is located in northeastern Accra, on the Accra Legon hills’ western slope. More than 40,000 students are enrolled there.
The liberal arts, social sciences, law, basic science, agriculture, and medicine were originally prioritized in the establishment of the University of Ghana.
The university’s curriculum, however, was expanded as part of a national educational reform program to include more technology-based and vocational courses, as well as postgraduate training.
When was the University of Ghana built?
In the British colony of the Gold Coast, the university was founded in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast. It was founded as an affiliated college of the University of London, which oversaw its academic programs and granted degrees The University of Ghana Act, 1961 (Act 79), which replaced the previous University College of Ghana, was passed by the Ghanaian government, led by Kwame Nkrumah, in 1961.
The institution obtained sovereign university status and the authority to grant its own degrees as a result of that act.

The University of Ghana, which is primarily based in Legon, about 12 kilometres northeast of Accra, has a medical school in the town of Korle-Bu, as well as a teaching hospital and a secondary/external campus in Accra.
It also has a graduate school of nuclear and allied sciences at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, making it one of the few African universities with programs in nuclear physics and nuclear engineering.
The university has appeared in a number of films and television commercials. The university is featured heavily in the television series Sun City. The university’s name has also been mentioned in the lyrics of Ghanaian artists, including Sarkodie’s “Legon Girls” Buk Bak’s “Klu blɔfo” Kwadei’s “Wutatami” and Okordii’s “Four years in Legon”
Despite the government’s plan to reopen schools for final-year students, the University of Ghana was adamant in June 2020 that it would continue with its planned online teaching and learning for the second semester of the 2019/2020 academic year
