Sassa R350 srd grant to be raised to R624 from the current R350

By | 27 May 2023

The maximum income threshold for the means test, initially set at R350 per month, has been gradually increased to R624. However, the Income Equality Initiative (IEI) and the Socio-Economic Rights Institute (SERI) have recommended that the means test should be raised to the upper bound poverty line of R1,417.

This proposed increase in the means test would provide much-needed financial support to individuals who are facing difficulties in meeting their basic needs. It would give them access to the necessary resources to improve their living conditions and enhance their overall quality of life.

Moreover, raising the means test to the upper bound poverty line would ensure that those who are in extreme need of financial assistance can access it. This would contribute to reducing inequality and guaranteeing equal access to the resources required for a dignified life.

In response to the current economic challenges, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced an increase in the Special Relief of Distress Grant (SRD) from the current rate of R350 to R624. This substantial raise in the grant amount aims to provide significant relief to vulnerable individuals who require financial assistance during these trying times.

The increased grant amount of R624 will be available to eligible applicants who meet the criteria for the SRD grant and will be implemented as soon as possible. This adjustment is expected to alleviate the financial hardships faced by many South Africans who are struggling to make ends meet.

It is important to note that with the new R624 amount, SASSA has also raised the means test threshold to R624 per month. This implies that individuals must not earn more than R624 per month in order to qualify for the SRD grant. This change was implemented in August 2022, replacing the previous maximum income amount of R350.
