What are the pros and cons of online degrees?

Online degrees and Distance Education in Ghana

Online degrees become more and more popular. But for whom are they good?

Bill Gates wrote in his 2015 letter to his foundation, that soon, world class education will just be several computer taps away, regardless of where anyone lives.

The great news is that online education and e-learning has the power to knock down the geographical barriers to close the skill gap and ensure that everyone in Africa with access to the internet can attain a good education.

As seen in other parts of the world, online courses such as an online MBA program, or an online Master program, can serve as a stand-alone source for official education if the university or college is accredited by the government of the country in which the learner resides, or in the country where the program has been devised.

The Global Business School’s Network’s Chief Executive Officer, the economist, Guy Pfefferman, highlights Africa’s negligence towards African higher education in the 2000 UN’s Millennium Development Goals.

Pfefferman states that the only way to attain this is via e-learning.

Clearly MOOC courses, online MBA programs, online Master programs, and online graduate degrees are the courses of the future that will help make Africa a thriving and booming economy.

Online degrees

Online degrees are very useful. Or completely overrated.

The truth is, like always, right in the middle.

And, as always, the good answers depends on your personal situation.

If you live near a big metropole, are financially stable with good income parents, a nice place to study at a big or famous university is for sure the best place to go.

But if you have no access to higher education, for whatever reasons, online degrees offer an awesome opportunity.

The Future of Education is Online

Distance education becomes a valuable contributor to the educational landscape. And online degrees are a vital part of it.

Most people who pursue online degrees hope to secure a job after completion of their studies. However, the fact is that some employers once they learn that you studied online, may stigmatize you.

Some people still think that physically attending a class is better than having to attend a class online.

However, this is misguided because research has shown that students who attend online classes perform better than their peers who attend physical classes.

There are many reasons why one opts to pursue an online master’s degree.

The main reason is that they are affordable.

Nevertheless, the question of whether online degrees are as legitimate as non-online degrees arises.

Here are my top 4 points on the legitimacy of online degrees.

1) Online Degrees are Accredited

Before enrolling for an online course, ensure that it is accredited.

Quality degrees will acquire accreditation without any problem from the relevant authorities.

Employers who are concerned about the legitimacy of online degrees will most likely check whether the course is accredited.

If you had done due diligence before starting, then you have nothing to worry about.

2) You can Transfer Online Credits

Previously we said that the future of education was online.

But now, the future is here.

Employers and institutions of higher learning recognize online degrees now more than ever.

Most famous colleges and universities around the world are not only offering physical classes but have also introduced online and distance learning.

It is, therefore, possible to transfer credits from an online degree whenever you want to pursue a graduate degree from any university.

That is proof enough that online degrees are legitimate.

3) Most Employers Have Embraced Online Graduates

One thing that graduates are worried about is whether the employer will dismiss their online degree.

Well, there is a group of students who fake certificates and claim to have earned them from an online institution. That is a crime that can land you in trouble.

Besides that, employers are less concerned about how you earned your degree whether online or you attended classes physically.

You may even be surprised that unless you disclose, they will not notice. It is because online degrees are legitimate.

4) Online Degrees are Rigorous

Online degrees are rigorous and cover all the necessary content as per the course.

More so, studying online caters for all types of students: the slow learners and the fast learners because the classes are personalized.

Therefore, by the time a student is done with their studies, they are as competent as those who attend the brick and mortar colleges.

Conclusion

Online degrees are legitimate and are recognized by employers all over the world.

However, the courses have to be accredited to gain recognition.

It is also possible to transfer credits from an online degree to a physical university whenever you want to advance your studies.

Besides, employers are not concerned about whether you attended classes or you studied online. All the employers want is an employee who will deliver.

Therefore you can relax and pursue your online degree without any worry.
