We cordially invite all qualified and interested applicants to apply for the Joint Japan-World Bank Scholarships Program 2023/2024 Portal. The application process is currently underway for eligible candidates.

How to apply

Step 1: Review the Benefits of the JJ/WBGSP Graduate Program The JJ/WBGSP scholarship offers various benefits to recipients, including:

  • Economy class air travel between your home country and the host university at the beginning and end of your study program, with a travel allowance of US $500 for each trip.
  • Tuition for your graduate program and basic medical insurance provided by the university.
  • Monthly subsistence allowance for living expenses while on campus, which varies depending on the host country. Please note that the scholarship covers the duration of the graduate program or up to two years, whichever is less. Certain expenses such as visa application costs, family support, additional courses, language training, and research-related expenses are not covered by the scholarship.

Step 2: Check the Qualification Criteria for the JJ/WBGSP Graduate Program Eligibility criteria for the program are provided in the Application Guidelines for each call. It is essential to meet the following general requirements:

  • Be a national of a World Bank member developing country.
  • Not hold dual citizenship of any developed country.
  • Be in good health.
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree earned at least three years prior to the Application Deadline.
  • Have three or more years of recent development-related work experience after earning the Bachelor’s degree.
  • Be currently employed in a full-time paid position related to development work.
  • Have at least three years of paid development-related employment since earning a Bachelor’s degree, acquired within the past six years. Please refer to the FAQs and Application Guidelines for more details on specific requirements and exceptions.

Step 3: Understand the Process and Venue for the JJ/WBGSP Graduate Program The scholarship applications from developing country nationals are reviewed by qualified assessors who assess the applications based on various factors. These factors include the quality of professional experience, professional recommendations, commitment to the home country, and education background. The finalists are selected based on the average scores and other criteria, such as maintaining geographical and gender diversity and providing opportunities to applicants with limited financial resources.

Step 4: Apply for the Scholarship To apply for the JJ/WBGSP Scholarship, you must be admitted unconditionally (except for funding) to at least one of the participating master’s programs listed. The application process is organized in two rounds. Application Window #1 is closed, and the names of selected applicants will be announced by the end of March 2023. For Application Window #2, you can submit your application from March 27 to May 26, 2023, at noon Washington time. The online application form is provided directly by the participating programs to the shortlisted applicants.
