All You Need to Know About “Admission Runs” and Scams

By | 23 May 2023

Many people often confuse educational consultancy services with “admission for money” schemes. While consultants cannot guarantee admission, they can provide guidance and information to help ease the admission process. They can recommend books, offer tutorials, and provide procedural guides. Unfortunately, there has been a blending of legitimate consultancy services with fraudulent “admission runs.” Let’s examine some important questions related to this issue.

What Do You Need to Gain Admission?

To gain admission, you primarily require important information. As someone who believes in principles, I do not support admission for money services. As a student myself, I did not pay anyone for admission into my medical course. So, if you are qualified for admission, why should you pay?

The amount spent on “admission for money” services could be better utilized for attending good tutorials, acquiring relevant past questions and textbooks, having proper study time, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. While the results may not be immediate, with time, you will achieve your goal.

What are the Reasons People Pay for Admission Runs?

Gaining admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria is undeniably challenging. There are multiple exams to be taken, such as WAEC, JAMB UTME, and Post UTME, and excelling in all of them is necessary for admission. However, due to the high competition and limited slots available, many individuals face admission rejections because they fail to meet the cut-off or lack adequate preparation. Some aspirants attempt these exams multiple times without success, leading to a strong desire for admission. The frustration and desperation make individuals vulnerable to fraudsters who promise guaranteed admission in exchange for money. These scammers take advantage of the situation, and sadly, this method has been successful in deceiving people. It is crucial to be cautious and skeptical of anyone who promises admission. Only the school itself can make that decision. Research shows that this is the most common reason why people pay for admission.

What are the Effects of Paying for Admission Runs?

The main effect of admission runs is the waste of time and money. Most individuals who demand money in exchange for guaranteed admission are scammers. They may not use the word “guaranteed,” but they will guide you toward the best possible path to admission. However, you end up losing both money and the supposed admission opportunity, wasting your time in the process. This can be demoralizing and may even lead some to contemplate suicide. Moreover, paying for admission runs encourages malpractice and promotes a negative mindset among students. It creates a desire to seek shortcuts instead of focusing on genuine efforts. This can have detrimental effects on the student’s education if they manage to gain admission through such means.

How to Identify Admission Scammers

Admission scammers target specific characteristics to gain access to you, often exploiting your psychology and ignorance. They know you are desperate for admission and believe that the process is difficult. They tailor their messages to what you want to hear. They prey on your lack of knowledge about admission processes, school websites, and valid information sources. They may even create their own forms, imitating the school’s official format, and sell them even after the official application deadline has passed. These scammers pressure you to make fast decisions, often using false urgency tactics. They manipulate you into believing that there are limited slots available or that the admission list is about to be compiled. They operate without a known address or business name, making it difficult to verify their legitimacy. Ultimately, they will ask for money, ranging from 10,000 to 80,000 Naira or more, for forms and admission runs. Beware of these signs.
