JHS grading system in ghana

The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) grading system for Junior High School (JHS) candidates is based on a combination of performance in external examinations and internal assessments. The grading system uses a 9-point numerical scale, with Grade 1 representing the highest level of performance and Grade 9 the lowest. The external examination includes objective and written tests, while the internal assessment marks are provided by the school. This grading system is designed to provide a comprehensive and accurate evaluation of a candidate’s performance and align with international standards.

In Ghana, the new Junior High School (JHS) grading system is based on a 9-point scale, which was introduced in 2017 by the West African Examination Council (WAEC). The new grading system replaced the previous A-F grading system.

Here is the new JSH grading system:

  • A1: 85% – 100% (Excellent)
  • B2: 75% – 84% (Very Good)
  • B3: 70% – 74% (Good)
  • C4: 65% – 69% (Credit)
  • C5: 60% – 64% (Credit)
  • C6: 55% – 59% (Pass)
  • D7: 50% – 54% (Pass)
  • E8: 45% – 49% (Pass)
  • F9: 0% – 44% (Fail)

This new grading system is intended to provide a more accurate and detailed representation of a student’s performance, and to align with international standards.
