Driving License In Ghana: Price, How to apply

What is a driving license?

A driver’s license is a legal authorization, or the official document confirming such an authorization, for a specific individual to operate one or more types of motorized vehicles—such as motorcycles, cars, trucks, or buses—on a public road. Such licenses are often plastic and the size of an ID card.

Which Institution Is Responsible For The Issuance Of Driving Licenses in Ghana?

Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, (DVLA) is the only institution recognized by law to issue and withdraw a driver’s license. It is a public sector organization that operates under the Ministry of Transport. It was formed in the year 1999 by an Act of Parliament (Act 569), 1999. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, (DVLA) has replaced the previous institution Vehicle Examination and Licensing Division, (VELD).

How Long Can It Take To Get A Driving License?

In Ghana, it usually, t takes two (2) weeks for the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority office to approve the application for a driving license.

How To Apply For A Driving License In Ghana

Apply In-Person

To apply for your driver’s license for the first time in Ghana you must visit the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) office yourself to make the application.

Step 1: Visit the DVLA offices to begin the application process

To apply for your driver’s license in Ghana you must visit the DVLA office yourself to get application forms and begin the application process.

Step 2: Purchase of application documents

Make all necessary payments to obtain application forms and all other necessary documents.

The application fees are as follows:

Form F GH₵ 2.50Form F1 GH₵ 12.50Eye Test GH₵ 5.00

Step 3: Filling in and submission of application forms

You are required to completely fill out and submit form F and Form F1

Attach the following documents to the forms before submitting application to the authority

Identity card (Proof of age -Minimum 18 years of age)

Basic education (BECE) or Adult Education certificate

You will also be provided with the Highway Code and syllabus for learners for study.

Step 4: Physical examination and eye test

After submission of the forms, the authority will proceed to an eye test for the applicant.

Step 5: Payment and issuance of Learner Driver’s Permit, L-Plate, Syllabus, and Highway Code

After that, you are required to enroll at any recognized driving college for training which must accumulate to 48 hours of driving.

For those who have expired learner’s licenses, a written exam is conducted for him/her, and drivers must score 70% or more in order to pass.

Step 7 : Capture biometric information and schedule and paying for written test

Visit the DVLA to schedule for a written test. You will have required to pay the written test a fee of GH₵ 5.00

Your biometric information will also be captured during this process. This will cost GH₵ 4.00

Step 8: Take the written examination and oral examination

Visit the DVLA to take your Written exams (Computer-Based Test)

Step 9: Take the In-Traffic Test and Driving exam

After the written exam, you will be required to take an In-Traffic Test which involves identification and explanation of several road signs and as soon as that expired

The In-Traffic Test cost a fee of GH₵ 4.00 which you will be required to pay before taking the test.

If you pass the road signs test, you will then take the last driving exam with a DVLA instructor.

Step 10: Payment of Driver’s License, P-Plate fees, and Capture for Driver’s License

After completing and passing all the exams you are required to pay for a temporary driver’s license and is given a date to return to the authority, on the return date, the applicant must carry his/her cover note issued by the authority instructor.

The details to appear in your driver’s licenses will also be captured during this visit.

You will be required to pay the following fees:

Temporal License Photo X GH₵ 5.00

Temporal License (gog) – New License GH₵ 5.00

Step 11: Return of temporary driver’s license to the DVLA and issuance of driver’s license and P-Plate

After completing all the process, the applicant is given a date to return to the authority, on the return date, the applicant must carry his/her cover note issued by the authority instructor to turn in for a drivers licence.

You will be issued with a driver’s license and a P-Plate after turning in your temporary driver’s license.

How Much Does It Cost To Acquire A New Driving License?

It will cost an applicant GHC 260.00 to get his or her hands on a new driving license in Ghana. Here is the breakdown;

• Learner’s permit costs GHC 160.00.

• The driving test costs GHC 50.00.

• The cost of the road sign test is also GHC 50.00.

Prices Of Other Forms Of License Acquisition.
Apart from acquiring a new license, there are other forms one can obtain a driving license.

These includes:
• Replacing an expired license which costs GHC 155.00.

• Upgrading license which costs GHC 345.00.

• Replacing the la ost license also costs GHC205.00.

• Converting foreign license cost GHC445.00.

How Do I Renew My Driving License?

The following are the procedures involved in renewing one’s driving license:

  1. The user should visit online.dvla.gov.gh/sign_in.
  2. Then the user should enter the username and the password used during registration.
  3. The user should click on the sign-in / log button.
  4. After which the user will be successfully logged in to the DVLA Portal.

Can I Drive without a Driving License?

The answer to the above question is NO. One must wait for the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, DVLA to issue the license before driving.
