A driving license is a legally binding document that certifies a person’s ability to drive a variety of vehicles, including cars, buses, and motorbikes depending on the class of License.

There are six distinct types of driving licenses in Ghana depending on the kind of vehicle you are registering.

Requirements For Acquiring A Driving License In Ghana?

The vehicle owner must submit the following documents;

• Appropriate documents from the Custom office.

• Must provide two (2) colored passport-sized photos of the applicant.

• Must provide a Personal Identification Card.

Apart from the requirements stated above, the applicant must also provide the following;

• The Proposed Personalised Number.

• Vehicle Number.

• The Current Registration Number.

Procedures Involved In Getting  Drivers License In Ghana

How To Apply In-Person

In Ghana, you must personally visit the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) office to submit an application for your first driver’s license.

Visit the DVLA offices to begin the application process

To apply for your driver’s license in Ghana you must visit the DVLA office yourself to get application forms and begin the application process.

Purchase of application documents

Get application forms and all other required paperwork by making all necessary payments.

The application fees are as follows: Form F GH₵ 2.50 Form F1 GH₵ 12.50 Eye Test GH₵ 5.0

Filling in and submission of application forms

Form F and F1 must be filled out completely and submitted. Before submitting an application to the authorities, attach the following papers to the forms. Identity card (Proof of age -Minimum 18 years of age). Basic education (BECE) or Adult Education certificate. You will also be provided with the Highway Code and syllabus for learners to study.

Physical examination and eye test

The authority will conduct an eye exam for the applicant after receiving the forms.

Payment and issuance of Learner Driver’s Permit, L-Plate, Syllabus, and Highway Code

After that, you are required to enroll in any recognized driving college for training which must accumulate to 48 hours of driving.

For those who have expired learner’s licenses, a written exam is conducted for him/her, and drivers must score 70% or more in order to pass.

Following that, you must enroll in any accredited driving school for training that must total 48 hours of driving. A written test is given to drivers whose learner’s permits have expired, and they must pass with a score of 70% or higher.

The capture of biometric information and scheduling and paying for written test

To schedule a written exam, go to DVLA. You will be asked to pay GH5.00 for the written exam. Additionally, your biometric data will be gathered throughout this procedure. It will run you GHC 4.00.

Take the written examination and oral examination

Take the In-Traffic Test and Driving exam

You will be needed to take an In-Traffic Test following the written exam, which entails identifying and outlining a number of traffic signs, and once that has passed. Before taking the In-Traffic Test, you will need to pay the test’s price of GH$4.00.

You will take the final driving exam with a DVLA instructor after passing the test for road signs. If you pass the driving test without any mistakes, you are eligible for a cover letter.

Payment of Driver’s License, P-Plate fees, and Capture for Driver’s License

After finishing and passing all of the exams, you must pay for a temporary driver’s license and are given a date to return to the authority. On the return date, the applicant is expected to bring his or her cover letter issued by the authority teacher.

The details to appear on your driver’s licenses will also be captured during this visit.

You will be required to pay the following fees:

Temporal License Photo X GH₵ 5.00

Temporal License (gog) – New License GH₵ 5.00

 Return of temporary driver’s license to the DVLA and issuance of driver’s license and P-Plate

After completing all the processes, the applicant is given a date to return to the authority, on the return date, the applicant must carry his/her cover note issued by the authorized instructor to turn in for a driver’s license.

You will be issued a driver’s license and a P-Plate after turning in your temporary driver’s license.
