2023 teacher licensing exam: All you need to know

In a few weeks, registration will open for the first administration of the 2023 teacher licensing exam. This comes after the results of the licensure tests from December 2022 were announced on Friday, February 3

Applicants must be aware of the following information if they plan to participate in the first administration of the licensing exam in 2023.

The first edition of the 2023 licensure exams will be released on this date.

The registration period for the first edition of the licensure exams is set to begin in March 2023. (usually 25th March, 2023). The examination is scheduled to begin in May 2023.

2023 NTC Registration Fee

The same exam fees as in December 2022 are expected to be charged in 2023.

1. To register for the examination, new candidates must pay GH 350.00.

2. Re-sitting candidates must pay GH150.00 for one (1) re-sit paper.

Candidates who are retaking two (2) exams must pay GH210.00.

3. Candidates who are retaking all three (3) papers must pay GH 350.00.

THE NTC EXAMS

According to Section 9 of the Education Act 2008 (Act 778), the National Teaching Council is responsible for enhancing the position and standing of teachers in Ghana as well as issuing licenses and registering them.

What is the goal of the NTC?

  1. Authorize and record teachers
  2. Create and reevaluate professional practice and ethical standards as needed.
  3. Set up a structure for ongoing professional development
  4. Teacher professional development (CPD)
  5. Work with the National Council for Tertiary
  6. Education to control teacher preparation.

Who can apply?

Any prospective candidates who are interested in teaching jobs and hold a Diploma in Basic Education (DBE), a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed), a Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE), or a Master of Education (M.Ed).

Why Is It Important For Teachers To Be Licensed And Registered?

  • In Ghana, a license is the only valid authorization to work as a teacher.
  • It denotes that the instructor possesses the knowledge and abilities demanded by the NTC.
  • It increases a teacher’s employability on a global scale.
  • It acknowledges a teacher as a professional member.

How are teachers enrolled and granted licenses?

  1. Their initial teacher training program must be completed (Diploma, B.Ed, PGDE etc). The pass list must have been posted to the NTC portal by the training facility.
  2. The Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination was required to them (GTLE)
  3. They must have received a temporary permit.
  4. They must have finished the orientation program (this includes portfolio assessment)
  5. Afterwards a full license is granted.

Kindly note that Teachers who were employed prior to September 2018 will receive licenses without having to take the GTLE.
