A total of 15 people with disabilities in the Ashanti Region’s Akrofuom District have gotten various products to help their businesses and way of life from the assembly’s disability fund.

WHeelchairs, industrial sewing machines, fufu pounding machines, deep freezers, and hair dryers were purchased using GHS 50,000 from the Assembly’s portion of the Disability Fund.

District Chief Executive (DCE) Mr. Maurice Jonas Woode stated that 90% of the district’s disabled residents who received assistance whenever the common fund was disbursed had been effectively registered.

According to the DCE, the Assembly has not only provided products to the PWDs but also organized skill-training programs for them in the district in the later part of 2022.

He reaffirmed the President’s commitment to enhancing the living conditions of the disadvantaged, noting that the President has instructed MMDCEs to give PWD-related issues first priority.

In light of this, he said, the Assembly has also taken actions to support those with disabilities, such as renewing their national health insurance and covering student tuition.

The District Social Welfare Officer, Mr. Gideon Osei Poku, identified the importance of using the things for their intended use and preventing them from going to waste, noting prior instances where some beneficiaries failed to use the items effectively.

He continued by saying that the Assembly painstakingly assessed their needs to determine what would be helpful to them before making the purchases.

PWDs in Akrofuom were educated about the Obuasi Training and Rehabilitation Center by Ms. Josephine Abena Kuukye, Secretary of the Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD), and she urged them to take use of it in order to learn new skills.

She said the facility offered practical training in a variety of skills, such as tailoring, basket weaving, leather work, and kente weaving, to those who were physically challenged.

On behalf of the recipients, Mrs. Sarah Tieku thanked the Assembly for its assistance, saying that it will enhance their quality of life.
