NADMO appeals for shelter and food for migrants from Burkina Faso

Mr. Yahya Alidu, West Sisala District Manager at the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), has called for temporary shelter and food for the migrants currently in some communities within the district.

This will help prevent refugees from mixing with communities, to facilitate the identification and prevent possible disease transmission into the country, Mr. Alidu said.

Mr. Alidu said this when the West Sisala District Association distributed various items including sacks of maize, mats and money to enable them to support themselves and their children.

He also called for support in any form such as tents, food and clothing to help them prevent migrants from staying with the local population to facilitate access and monitoring.

Introducing the migrants in Weyero, Nemuru and Velimoh, Ms Aisha Patong Hur, District Chief Executive (DCE) said it was to help them with their maintenance while they were in Ghana.

In engaging with the community chiefs and elders after the presentation, DCE reminded community members of the “See Something, Say Something” mantra geared towards increasing public awareness of the indicators of terrorism.

Ms. Hur also encouraged people to call the free hotline 999 to report suspicious personalities, activities or behavior of persons to security for rapid intervention.

I have alluded to the association’s intention to work with relevant state agencies to establish a refugee camp, wherever possible.

The DCE said, “I expect you (the immigrants) to behave well within the laws of the country and to do what is acceptable in Ghana to make your stay in Ghana comfortable.”

The heads of the affected communities were grateful for the gesture and quick response as the donations would go a long way in augmenting their efforts. This donation comes within the framework of the association’s efforts to provide some relief to refugees who fled from Burkina Faso a week ago to some parts of the West Sisala region, fearing a terrorist attack.
