The World Bank Young Professionals Program is now open for applications on its portal. Eligible candidates are encouraged to apply for this highly competitive program. To be considered for this program, applicants must meet the requirements and qualifications outlined by the World Bank Young Professionals Program.

The World Bank Young Professionals Program (WBG YPP) provides an attractive compensation and benefits package for successful candidates who are awarded a 5-year term contract. The WBG YPP benefits package includes health, life, and accident insurance, a pension plan, and potential relocation and mobility benefits, based on the guidelines established by the World Bank Group (WBG).

Requirements for Qualification for World Bank Young Professionals Program

The World Bank Young Professionals Program welcomes applications from qualified individuals with diverse professional, academic, and cultural backgrounds from all over the world.

To be eligible for the program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Must have been born on or after October 1, 1989.
  • Must possess a graduate degree which could either be a master’s or doctoral degree*.
  • For placement at the World Bank, a relevant master’s degree should be completed by July 15, 2023, or a Ph.D. before March 2023 in a field of study related to a World Bank Business Area.
  • For placement at IFC & MIGA, a relevant graduate degree should be completed before September 12, 2022, in a field of study related to an IFC or MIGA Business Area, which may include a Master’s of Business Administration (or equivalent), Economics, Finance, International Relations, Science and Engineering

Features of the World Bank Young Professionals Program

The World Bank Young Professionals Program offers unique features for participants, including opportunities for professional experience and career development, extensive training on WBG policies, products, and operations, global rotations across WBG institutions, mentoring and coaching, networking events, and management-supported job placements.

As full-time employees, YPs work on their respective unit’s work program and gain first-hand experience in WBG operations through field missions, while building networks and knowledge across the organization.

The WBG YPP curriculum aims to develop foundational knowledge and competencies for leadership, offering leadership and professional development workshops, networking opportunities, mentorship, and conversations with WBG leadership.

Intensive training on WBG policies, products, and operations ensures that YPs know how to operationalize joint solutions to development challenges and retain and apply this knowledge to their work for years to come.

Global rotations are a core component of the YPP curriculum, providing YPs with the exposure to understand how the institutions work and align their skills to priority areas like countries affected by fragility, conflict, and violence (FCV).

YPs are assigned several mentors at the peer and departmental level, providing advice on topics ranging from settling into Washington, DC, to identifying career opportunities throughout the YP experience and beyond.

The WBG YPP office organizes regular networking events for YPs to stay in touch with program alumni, stakeholders, and WBG staff.

YPs are provided management-level support in their transitions to rotations and post-YPP job placements, ensuring their skills are best placed across the business.

Choosing a Field Relevant to the Business Areas of the World Bank Young Professionals Program

To qualify for the World Bank Young Professionals Program, applicants must meet certain criteria. They must have a specialization in a field relevant to Young Professionals Program Business Areas and demonstrate relevant professional experience or continued study at the doctoral level.

For World Bank placement, candidates must demonstrate at least 3 years of relevant experience, or the equivalent in a continued study at the doctoral level.

For IFC & MIGA placement, candidates must have at least 4 years of relevant experience in finance, political risk insurance and credit enhancement, project/program development, economic development, and/or consulting. Certifications such as the CFA are a plus. Fluency in English is also required.

In addition to the basic qualifications, applicants should aim to:

Show a strong dedication and enthusiasm towards global development, Have exceptional academic qualifications, Possess outstanding skills in engaging with clients, communication, and leading teams, Exhibit knowledge of the latest developments and trends in the relevant sector.

Candidates are also required to have work experience in emerging markets or developing countries and full proficiency in one of the official WBG languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish, are both considered advantageous attributes for applicants.

The Bank Group aims to hire staff of the highest calibre, from as wide a geographical basis as possible. Preference is given to nationals of WBG member countries or countries of operations.

Applying for World Bank Young Professionals Program

The application process for the WBG YPP requires candidates to submit items, including their

  • resume or CV
  • academic credentials, and a short essay.
  • World Bank candidates must also provide a summary of their thesis or dissertation, but only if applicable.
  • In addition to these materials, applicants must include three professional or academic
  • recommendations to support their candidacy.
