The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is building a new power supply station to improve the supply of electricity in Ho and its surrounding districts. The station, located at Sokode Gbogame, will have two 220 MVA transformers and network all outgoing circuits for a consistent power supply. Michael Buabin, the Regional Engineer of ECG, made the announcement at a media event in Ho and said the station will support industrial and commercial expansion in the Ho Municipality and the Ho West District.

The Sokode  Abutia  Akrofu area is becoming an industrial enclave with various facilities, including Zoomlion’s integrated plant. To meet the energy demands of Ho’s growing regional capital, the ECG is constructing similar power stations at Golokuati and Ayoma. The company is also boosting its power transformers, minimizing damage to lines and installations, and establishing more offices to enhance the customer experience.

ECG aims to roll out its Smart Meter service in 2023, enabling customers to reload credit from their mobile phones. The company plans to “know its customers” by improving contact through emails and other means to improve service delivery.

The ECG is playing a vital role in the upcoming Independence Day celebrations, which will be hosted in the Volta Region. The company is working with the bulk supplier, GRIDCO, to ensure uninterrupted power supply before, during, and after the event. Additionally, the ECG is installing or replacing more than 2,000 streetlights throughout the Municipality for the occasion.

Togbui Avudzega Ativui I, the Regional Protection Manager, urged the media to continue supporting efforts to curb losses due to illegal connections, which contribute to an increase in power costs.

The ECG’s policy to reward whistleblowers on illegal connections is still in operation, and the company paid GHC33,000 to a reporter of power theft in 2022. Emmanuel Agbaxode, Chairman of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA), praised the ECG for prioritizing the media in its public outreach campaign, which will benefit practitioners through capacity building.
