President Akufo-Addo: Transparency and accountability are essential to sustaining Ghana’s democracy

President Akufo-Addo has mentioned, that for the country to continue on its democratic path,

It is critical to improving transparency and accountability in governance structures in order to combat corruption and the misappropriation of public funds.

On the eve of Ghana’s 30th anniversary of the Fourth Republic, President Akufo-Addo made the remarks in a televised address in Accra on Friday.

“There are those who would rather have an authoritarian rule because they claim our country is underdeveloped and democracy is cumbersome, and we need to get things done in a hurry.

“We still have some work to do to convince such people that we are all safer under democracies,” the President mentioned.

“As President of the Republic, I assure you that, out of duty to our children and grandchildren, and to generations yet unborn, my government will not give up when it comes to deepening our democracy and guaranteeing the integrity of the electoral process,” he added.

He mentioned the Right to Information Act and the establishment of the Office of the Special Prosecutor to investigate and prosecute corruption.

“We must do everything within our means to safeguard our democracy,” he stated.

“Tomorrow’s milestone is to the great credit of you, the Ghanaian people, the ordinary men and women who make up the fabric of our nation.

We all made a commitment to forging a unified nation based on democratic principles and the rule of law thirty (30) years ago, the President recalled.

The President stated, “We have made significant progress toward realizing this vision, and I am confident that, with a spirit of fairness, diligence, integrity, and reconciliation, the best days for Mother Ghana are still ahead of us.”

Let’s, therefore, keep working to build the framework for the development of a new Ghanaian civilisation, which will give true meaning to the fundamental principles of justice and freedom upon which our country was founded, he said.

Although the country was currently experiencing problems with its economic performance, he noted that with collective efforts, she would soon overcome the obstacles and get back on the path of progress and prosperity.
