The Mawazo Institute is a women-led organization that recognizes the potential of early-career African women researchers. With the aim of supporting their contribution towards finding evidence-based solutions for pressing development needs, Mawazo recognizes the qualities of these PhD-holding women as driven, creative, analytical, and critical thinkers. The institute believes that the unique perspective and voice these women bring to research and development, as African women, holds the key to driving innovative, holistic, and sustainable progress not just on the continent, but globally as well.

Benefits of Mawazo Institute Fellowship Programme

The Mawazo Institute empowers early-career African women researchers by providing them with a range of resources to support their work. These resources include virtual training and professional development opportunities through the Mawazo Learning Exchange (MLEx) e-learning platform, connections to expert and peer mentors, funding for research activities with grants up to US$2,500, a stipend worth $500, data bundles worth $150 for easy access to the MLEx platform, research and editorial support from the Mawazo team and partners, and visibility through the Mawazo Voices program for public policy and engagement, strategic communications, and strategic partnerships.

Application Requirements for Mawazo Institute Fellowship Programme

  • Open to women belonging to an African country
  • To be eligible for Mawazo’s support, one must identify as a woman, including cisgender women, transgender women, and individuals assigned female at birth who are non-binary, gender non-conforming, or genderqueer and have experienced exclusion from decision-making spaces. Additionally, having strong English proficiency in both writing and speaking is necessary
  • Be enrolled for their PhD at an accredited university in an African country
  • Applicant should have completed their course work and passed their departmental or graduate school proposal defense.
  • Demonstrate that your PhD research is focused on African development and addresses a significant policy priority at the global, regional, national, or subnational level.
  • Demonstrate that they have a “Big Idea” to transform Africa through their research
  • Show your potential to lead both within and outside academic settings, and exhibit a strong commitment to using your skills and knowledge for a positive impact on society.
  • Availability to fully participate in the programme in 2023 to 2024 is key.

Documents Required for Application

  • A completed online application form
  • A current 2-page CV
  • A letter confirming current enrolment in an accredited PhD programme
  • A letter confirming that you have completed your course work (if applicable) and passed your departmental defense
  • A recommendation letter from your PhD supervisor and a second referee
