Ghana commences a media campaign to discourage drivers from speeding

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has launched a road safety mass media campaign in collaboration with the Accra and Kumasi Metropolitan Assemblies to help reduce speeding among drivers.

The campaign, called “Surgeon,” is expected to run for six weeks on TV, radio, social media, and out-of-home media outlets, with a focus on speeding enforcement to encourage drivers to obey speed limits and save lives.

Mr. Kweku Ofori Asiamah, the Minister of Transport, stressed in a statement after the launch stressed “I urge all road users and duty bearers to keep up the good work throughout the festive period and beyond. Everyone has a responsibility to work together to ensure a safe Christmas.”

“I urge transportation companies and unions to show their commitment to saving lives by implementing basic operational standards, being each other’s keeper, and promoting a strong road safety culture.”

The NRSA, for its part, stated its commitment to enact data-driven actions to save lives, noting that the campaign, in conjunction with enforcement efforts, was one of the strategies used to combat speeding and urging all drivers to obey posted speed limit signs.

“While we have seen some progress in the reduction of road deaths, much more still needs to be done.” “We urge all drivers to obey posted speed limits in order to put an end to these senseless tragedies,” the statement said.

The NRSA stated in a statement that “the quest to reduce road crash deaths on Ghana’s roads requires concerted efforts among stakeholders,” emphasizing that “a mass media campaign, along with strong police enforcement, is required to reduce speeding, which is a risky road behavior, to help bring about this change.”

According to the statement, the “Surgeon” campaign was developed based on national and local data as well as rigorous research into what messages resonate with those who frequently exceed speed limits in Ghana.
