Privileges of a Doctoral Scholarship from Bonn University

  • Travel compensation (depending on country of origin)
  • A monthly scholarship of €1,500 (plus up to €300 for a spouse and €250 for each child who is travelling with you)
  • Up to €300 monthly research expense allowance that may be submitted to the international office once the scholarship has been granted. You will receive information on how to apply for the allowance along with your scholarship award.
  • The grant is available for a minimum of three months and a maximum of twelve. Please refer to the financing plan’s instructions for calculating costs (and use the following Excel table, download here).

Qualifications for the University of Bonn PhD. Scholarship

International doctoral applicants who are enrolled in a university or research facility in Africa, South America, or Asia are given preference.

Funding is not available to doctoral applicants who are already enrolled in the University of Bonn’s PhD program. Funded individuals should complete their doctorates at their own universities (to avoid brain drain).

Academic Excellence and Mutual Gain

  • the calibre of the research to be conducted while the visitor is in Bonn
  • the topic’s applicability to current events in the area of origin
  • Contributions of intellectuals to Bonn’s academic life (e.g. via public lectures, seminars or colloquiums)
  • Integration of scholars into host institute (location of employment, inclusion in ongoing teaching and research activities, and adoption of an efficient supervision model)
  • Strategic Relevance and Possibility for Future Cooperation: The extent of the current collaboration; the scholar’s aspirations for long-term research collaborations with the Bonn host institute; the relationship to Bonn’s research profile
  • how the findings will be disseminated to larger academic communities
    In the event of a tie between two proposals, the one with a better rating in the category of “academic excellence and mutual benefit” will be given preference.

How to Apply for the Scholarship

  • All qualified and interested? To apply, visit the University of Bonn at www.uni-bonn.de.
  • A full-time professor from the University of Bonn must submit the application. Per host/professor, up to two applications may be taken into account.
  • A motivational letter that has been signed is required of PhD candidates.
