The Gold Coast Government established Opoku Ware School, originally known as Yaa Asantewaa College, at the request of the Catholic Church in Ashanti Region to cater for boys education as an alternative to traveling to St. Augustines College in Cape Coast.

Rev. Fr. Peter Burgess conducted interviews and admitted 60 boys to Santas School in February 1952. He devised a number-based identification system that is still in use today, with the first batch being numbered K1 to K60.

Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II changed the name to Opoku Ware because he thought it was strange for a boys school to have a female name.
