According to the criteria of the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS), Grade 12 students in South Africa are required to take Life Orientation (LO) as a topic. The following are some of the assignments that students in Grade 12 can be required to finish in LO:

  1. Current event critique: Students may be asked to choose a current event from the media and provide a critical analysis of it. Students might be asked to list the root problems, key players, and potential remedies. Pupils might be asked to consider how the incident will affect people, society, and the environment.
  2. Community service undertaking: Students might be asked to plan and carry out a community service undertaking. The goal of this project should be to solve a local social or environmental problem. The project needs to be carefully planned, carried out, and assessed. The influence their project had on the community and the lessons they learned will need to be considered by the learners.
  3. Career exploration: Learners may be asked to research different career options and evaluate their suitability for a particular career. They will need to consider their skills, interests, and values and match them with the requirements of the career. They will also need to explore the educational and training requirements and the job outlook for the career.

These are just some of the tasks that learners may be expected to complete in LO. The specific tasks will depend on the school and the teacher. It is important for learners to actively engage in the subject, participate in class, and take responsibility for their learning.
