The University of Ghana, the first and biggest of Ghana’s six public institutions, opened its doors in 1948 as an affiliated college of the University of London. In 1961, an Act of Parliament established the University of Ghana degree-awarding status.
The University provides distinctive courses in the arts, business, physical and biological sciences, law, agriculture, nuclear and related sciences, and engineering sciences, with an aim to generate world-class human resources to solve problems in global development. We also provide courses in medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, and allied health disciplines within our College of Health Sciences.
Courses in crop and soil science, animal science, home science, agribusiness, and agricultural economics are available at the College of Agriculture. To improve our curriculum, we keep approving new and updated programs and courses.
Academic members are involved in studies that support policy-making for national development through our research institutes and other centres of learning and research, frequently in partnership with other international institutes.
The university is working to promote more interdisciplinary research in order to respond to Ghana’s development demands on a continental and international scale. Currently, the university has affiliations with a variety of Ghanaian and foreign institutions.

The University of Ghana Acceptance Rate
The admittance rate at the University of Ghana is 35%. The University of Ghana’s International Programs Office promotes all international activities, such as the acceptance of international students, Memorandums of Understanding between the university and foreign educational institutions, visiting scholars, study abroad programs, staff and student exchange programs, and collaborative research.
The Office’s role on the world stage is to represent the university. Due to the efforts of the Office, the university has over 200 agreements with universities around the globe. To facilitate student exchange programs, the office collaborates with groups like the Council on International Educational Exchange CIEE, California State University CSU, the University of California Education Abroad Programme Home | UCEAP, and the International Society of Education Planners International Student Exchange Programs.
