Understanding the Russell Group of UK Universities

By | 18 June 2023

When you envision your post-secondary education, where do you see yourself studying? The UK has become a popular study-abroad destination for students because it provides an opportunity to explore the world while earning a degree. Another advantage of UK degrees is that they are generally shorter than those in Canada. With so many different countries nearby, you can travel effortlessly and experience the adventure of a lifetime. If you have made up your mind to study in the UK, how do you decide which schools to apply to? Similar to Canada’s top universities and the US’s Ivy League, the UK has the Russell Group.

What is the Russell Group?

The Russell Group is a consortium of 24 self-selected universities located throughout the UK. These institutions share a common focus on research and have a reputation for academic excellence. They produce more than two-thirds of the world’s leading research created in UK universities.

Each year, more than 250,000 students, including nearly 90,000 international students, choose to study at a Russell Group university due to their world-class research-intensive education. According to Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings for 2023, 10 Russell Group institutions made it into the top 100, with three placing in the top 10.
