Starting January 9, Ogun state Muslim Group Directs Students to Wear Hijab

In line with the recent Supreme Court of Nigeria ruling affirming the rights of Muslim students to wear hijabs to school, the Ogun State League of Imams and Alfas has directed all female Muslim students in public schools in the state to wear hijabs alongside their school uniforms.

The directive was contained in a statement signed by its Secretary General, Sheikh Tajudeen Adewunmi, on Tuesday, December 27.

The group revealed that they had informed the state government of the need for their female children to wear hijabs to schools in Abeokuta, the State capital, to which the government obliged.

According to the statement, the use of hijab will commence on January 9, 2023, when students resume for their second term. The league further explained that the desired hijab is a white-colored shoulder-length cape.

While making the announcement, the league appealed to the state government to caution teachers and school heads to desist from denying Muslim female students their human rights and accept the approval of the use of hijab in schools.

It is hoped that this directive will promote religious tolerance and freedom in the state.
