The National Union of Ghana Students has called on government and parliament to rework the proposed public Universities bill currently being considered by parliament.

President of NUGS, Isaac Hyde called on government to amend the bill to include a representative of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana in the University councils as the previous respective University laws had.

“After critically perusing the Bill, we are convinced that there has to be further and immediate revisions to portions of the draft before laid before parliament, this is not to disregard some good aspects of the bill:

Some of the provisions under strong contention include the victimization of the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana on the university council under Section 5 of the draft; the conspicuous missing of a Student Rep on the Academic Board under Section 19,” NUGS noted.

NUGS described the provision that will allow the president and or the Minister of education to appoint a majority of the members of the various University councils and the consequent appointment of the Vice Chancellor by this council dominated by executive appointees as one that will make the Vice Chancellor and the universities puppets of government.

NUGS further faulted several clauses in the bill and called on government to amend all that to reflect the concerns of all who matter in the management of Universities in the country.
