How to answer nursing training interview questions

Be personal, as this is a highly personal response, but remain professional. For example, I initially pursued nursing because I have many family members who work in the field, such as my aunt and grandmother, and it seemed like a solid job that also made a significant difference in people’s lives.

The main topic of any interview is you. The interview panel want to get to know you as a person, not simply your talents, and academic qualifications. Each nurses training school has its unique way.

Tell Me About Yourself

One of the most asked nurses training questions in this category is not usually framed as a question. “Tell me about yourself” is a highly open-ended question. You may be wondering what they are asking. Are they inquiring about your family and home life? Your education? What is your professional background? What are your hobbies?

With this question, the interviewer wants to hear what you believe is the most crucial information they should be aware of. This is where planning ahead of time and using your nursing assessment skills come into play. Your response is an opportunity to demonstrate how well you fit into that mission with your skills.

  • Adapt. Craft your response based on what you already know the interviewer wants to know. You’ve looked up what the company’s mission and values are, and you know what they want from their job description. Your answer will shift based on the company you interview with.
  • Be specific. While you can start with general statements like, “my best strength is my ability to stay calm under pressure,” but support those claims with specific examples. Was there a stressful time at work or school when staying calm made a difference?
  • Use examples. As always, use both personal and professional experiences to support your answers.
  • Stay focused. Focus on just a few important points. Start with the top one or two most important points or strengths from your resume.
