About the University of Mines and Technology
The Institute of Mines and Technology (UMaT) is a public university in the Western Region of Ghana, located in Tarkwa. In 1952, UMaT was established under the name Tarkwa Technical Institute. The Tarkwa School of Mines was established in 1961 to help train people for the mining industry in Ghana.
In 1976, UMaT was admitted to the Kwame Nkrumah College of Science and Technology (KNUST).
UMaT was elevated to a university college on October 1, 2001, and renamed Western University College at KAUST. By order of Parliament, UMaT became a full-fledged university in November 2004 (Law 677).
