Nigeria’s Peter Obi of the Labour Party who is also a candidate for president of Nigeria, claims that before a rally on Saturday in Lagos, his supporters were attacked and hurt.
Previous elections in Nigeria have frequently been marred by violence between supporters of opposing political parties since the commercial capital is a bastion of the incumbent party.
supporters of Peter Obi attacked
Local media stations broadcast images of a number of wrecked vehicles bearing Labour Party decals and injured demonstration attendees receiving medical attention at the rally site in downtown Lagos. Police in the area were silent at the time.
We cannot continue to allow attacks on members of the political opposition, which are frequently stoked by the inflammatory rhetoric of political leaders, according to a statement from Obi.
He requested that authorities look into the matter and stated that the attacker’s identity was not immediately known.
At the gathering, Obi promised supporters that, if elected, he would enhance security to enable farmers to increase agricultural output, reform the police, and put an end to oil thefts in the Niger Delta. Although he is in the lead in many surveys, the contest is predicted to be close.
His core constituency is reported to be young voters who are fed up with unemployment, corruption, and financial troubles.
The incumbent All Progressives Congress candidate Bola Tinubu and former vice president Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party will be Obi’s opponents in the parliamentary and presidential elections on February 25.
