Some second-year students at Sandia Senior Secondary School in Upper East Region burned parts of their school dormitories in protest of the confiscation of their mobile phones.

According to 91.3 FM’s regional correspondent Moses Appiah, the students were protesting the school’s student band leader for confiscating their mobile phones on campus.

In the course of the violent protest, the students advanced to burn down a building housing the cadets’ supplies at the school.

The fire then spread to other rooms including the school dormitory where a district fire service team came to the rescue.

The Upper East regional chapter of the Conference of Assistant High School Presidents (CHASS) Richard Acompassi, speaking after the incident, noted that student indiscipline had become too much in the district.

According to him, just a few days ago, the students of Kusanapa Senior High School and the administration were in disagreement over where to take the exam.

“It’s sad that we talk every day about students and violence in different schools.”

“Lack of discipline is a matter of concern, and I think parents and relevant stakeholders should find a solution to that.”

“What happened with those students at Sandima High School, just confiscating a mobile phone?

The students believe that burning school property is the way to go.

After that, we are really in trouble as a society.
Addressing the action taken by the school management against the students, the Chairman indicated that the Acting Ghana Education Service (GES) in the district will soon set up a committee to investigate the matter.

Currently, the Interim Director of GES will convene a committee meeting either today or tomorrow Friday, December 16, 2022, to see the way forward.

“But as for me, these students should be charged with damages,” he suggested.
