The University of Ghana is a public university in Accra, Ghana. It is the oldest and largest of the thirteen Ghanaian national public universities.
In the British colony of the Gold Coast, the university was established in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast. It used to be a college that was affiliated with the University of London, which oversaw its academic programs and conferred degrees.
The college was renamed the University College of Ghana after Ghana achieved independence in 1957. In 1961, when it was granted full university status, it changed its name once more to the University of Ghana.
The University of Ghana is located in northeastern Accra, on the Accra Legon hills’ western slope. More than 40,000 students are enrolled there.
The University of Ghana’s Vice-Chancellor at the moment is Nana Aba Appiah Amfo. She was appointed acting vice chancellor in July 2021. She was named the University of Ghana’s vice chancellor later in October 2021. Her appointment becomes official on October 26, 2021. She became the university’s first vice-chancellor and the first woman to hold the role.
