Islamic cleric: “Female Genital Mutilation has no place in Islam.”

In an interview with the media in Tema, Shaykha Yussif, a Tutor at the Frafaha Senior High School, stated that FGM is a traditional practice, not a religious ethos.

Female Genital Mutilation is the non-medical removal of external female genitalia or other injuries to the female genital organs.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a harmful practice with no legitimacy in Islam, according to Shaykha Ayisha Yussif, an Islamic cleric.

“According to the Quran, the painful act is not an Islamic religious obligation,” she explained.

According to Shaykha Yussif, some tribes forced their daughters to undergo the heinous act under the false pretence that doing so was required by Islam. She continued, “The practice has done a lot of damage to girls, depriving many of an interest in sex, an important leisure which Allah gave to all human beings.”

She argued that Islam respected each tradition’s way of life and urged Muslims to reject customs that infringed on members’ rights.

She emphasized that “FGM is a risky, potentially fatal procedure that causes girls to endure unspeakable pain and suffering.”

The Islamic cleric emphasized that FGM must end immediately because Islam is very clear that no part of the body should be removed or altered. He also added that only boys were supposed to have their hair cut.

She emphasized the necessity of rallying the public and the media to oppose the harmful and degrading practice.

Religious and traditional leaders were cautioned by Shaykha Yussif to pay attention to issues that affect women’s dignity and to identify and punish those who commit inhumane acts.
