The Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies (WCED) is inviting applications for a WCED Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Michigan through January 15. This award is exclusively for those who have successfully defended and submitted their thesis prior to commencing the Fellowship to participate in the Study of Democracies. Winners will receive a stipend of $55,000 annually, in addition to other benefits.

Fellowship Description

The Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies (WCED) at the University of Michigan invites applications for postdoctoral fellows at WCED. The fellowship supports research on the broad historical, political, economic, and social conditions under which democracies emerge and authoritarian regimes persist. Postdoctoral Fellows in Emerging Democracies are expected to focus on their research, participate in WCED workshops and events, and give one public lecture during the fellowship year.

Award Value

Three winners will get annual salaries, each of $55,000 and $7,000 in research funds.

The WCED Postdoctoral Fellowship welcomes all disciplines, but primarily from political science, sociology, history, and anthropology areas.

Eligibility and Criteria

To be eligible for the WCED Postdoctoral Fellowship,

  • Fellows are welcomed from all disciplines.
  • Fellows must have successfully defended and filed their dissertations before beginning the fellowship.
  • Eligibility is restricted to those who have received their Ph.D. after January 1 of a year prior to application opening.

The United States citizens are welcome to apply.

Application Instruction

All candidates applying for the WCED Postdoctoral Fellowship are required to submit the materials as follows:

  • A two-page research plan that outlines the research project and how the fellow will spend his/her time during the fellowship year.
  • Curriculum Vitae.
  • A scholarly writing sample, such as a dissertation chapter, conference paper, or journal article
  • Two letters of recommendation.

Submission Deadline

January 15 every year.
