UKZN won gold for the best individual stand

Once again, the College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science at UKZN has demonstrated their outstanding prowess, achieving a remarkable feat at the Royal Show. It seems as if Britney Spears had UKZN in mind when she penned the lyrics to her famous song, “Oops! I did it again,” for the college has once more pulled off an incredible achievement by winning Gold and claiming the trophy for the best individual stand.

Terry Strachan, the Royal Agricultural Show Manager, expressed high praise for UKZN, stating, “UKZN rated highly in all categories, and we were particularly impressed by the enthusiasm and extra effort put in by the students and staff who manned the UKZN stand.” The success of the college can be attributed to the passion and extensive knowledge showcased by the staff and students at the stand, who went above and beyond to share their expertise with the general public, according to Swasti Maney, the mastermind behind the project and Public Relations Officer for the College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science.

The stand, presented in conjunction with the second Ukulinga Howard Davis Memorial Symposium, highlighted research conducted within the School of Agricultural, Earth and Environmental Sciences, focusing on climate change and food security. Visitors were captivated by various attractions, including an innovative project by UKZN Enactus students involving vertical farming and food security for university students. An interactive climate change model displayed drought and flooding scenarios, while the work of UKZN’s Farmer Support Group with small-scale farmers was also showcased. Additionally, specially designed “khukhu khayas” (chicken homes) were presented to promote easy access to protein supplies.

To add excitement and draw crowds, the School of Life Sciences exhibited an impressive collection of fascinating creatures, such as tenrecs and hissing cockroaches from Madagascar, tarantulas, and a variety of boa constrictors of different sizes.
