UKZN congratulates to all Comrades Runners

I am delighted to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all our students, staff, and alumni who took part in the 92nd Comrades Marathon. Your exceptional representation of UKZN as ambassadors fills me with immense pride. Your unwavering commitment and dedication to participating in one of the world’s most renowned marathons are truly admirable and inspiring.

This year, we have achieved remarkable milestones, with a significant number of runners from the UKZN Athletics Club participating in the marathon. Out of the 17 registered UKZN runners, an impressive 13 crossed the finish line within the 12-hour mark. I would like to acknowledge Mr Gcino-Fuze Ngcobo, who was among the first 1000 runners to complete the race.

Among the University’s seven first-time Comrades runners, four successfully completed the marathon, and Mr Nkeka Tseole was awarded a Bill Rowen Medal for finishing within the first nine hours—an outstanding accomplishment.

One of our esteemed long-standing staff members and a Council member, Mr Tony Singarum, continues to shine as an exemplary role model for all runners, having completed an impressive 22 Comrades marathons.

Furthermore, UKZN alumnus and Council member, Mr Sammy Mashita, conquered the marathon and earned himself a well-deserved bronze medal.

Each participant had their own personal motivations for undertaking this ultimate human race—some sought personal achievement, others ran to raise funds for their communities, and many ran to honor their loved ones.

I extend my gratitude to all the student and staff volunteers who dedicated their time and effort, starting as early as 3 am on Sunday, to provide refreshments and cheer the runners along the course. I would also like to express my appreciation to the Health Sciences students who offered free physiotherapy services to all the runners.

To all students and staff members who have an interest in running, I encourage you to join and train with the UKZN Athletics Club. For more information, please contact Leigh Anne at 031 260 2281 or email [email protected].
