The postponement of the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE), March 2023 edition has put some newly trained teachers in limbo as to when they will write their examination.

The postponement was announced following government’s directive on measures put in place to prevent the spread of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.

Since its postponement, newly trained teachers who couldn’t sit for the September exams due to reasons such as referrals, financial problems, ill health and those awaiting to undertake the March 2023 edition of the GTLE have expressed mixed reactions and raised series of critical questions concerning their fate pending the 2023 Ghana Education Service postings.

In quest to know when the examination will commence, the national President of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG), Mr. Augustine Appiah interacted with the executive secretary of the National Teaching Council (NTC), Mr. Christian Addai-Poku. In response, Mr. Addai-Poku, previsioned that, by June, the pandemic might have been brought under control in the country and the exams shall take place in June. If by June the situation isn’t over, candidates may have to wait and join the September 2023 edition, he added.

Mr. Addai-Poku further added that, they intended planning to resort to online examination for candidates to sit for the papers while at their respective homes but there are some challenges regarding the current state of the online portal and is being sorted out. Moving forward, the council may consider the use of online systems in conducting the examination, he assured. He admonished all candidates to remain calm and keep on preparing towards the professional exams.

The GTLE was introduced in 2023 to get newly trained teachers equipped with a professional license which will qualify them to enter the Ghanaian classroom. All newly trained teachers from 2023 requires a provisional Teacher licence certificate, National Service Certificate and a certificate from a training institution to qualify them for appointment with the Ghana Education Service.
