The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant, particularly the SASSA R350 SRD Grant, has become essential to many households struggling amid challenging times. With recent changes in the management of the grant, it’s crucial to understand the appeal process.

SASSA recently announced that they will no longer handle reconsideration requests for unsuccessful R350 SRD grants. Instead, the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) will take over this function. If you wish to appeal for the R350 Grant with SASSA, this information is vital.

How to Appeal for the New SRD Grant Step-by-Step Process

  • Go to the new SRD Appeals Website
  • Enter your identification number
  • Provide the cell phone number you used during the application process
  • Click/Tap on the “Send Pin” button
  • Once you receive the Pin, insert it into the required field and click “Submit”
  • Choose the month you are appealing for
  • Choose the reason for your appeal application from the options provided in the drop-down menu
  • Click/Tap “Submit” to complete the appeal application process.

If you were unsuccessful in your application for the R350 SASSA SRD grant and you believe that you qualify, you must submit an appeal application for each month in which your application was rejected.

Please note that SASSA will no longer deal with reconsideration requests for the R350 SRD grant, as this function will be taken over by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA).

How to Exercise Your Right Appealing for COVID-19 SRD

If you have applied for the Covid-19 SRD on SASSA’s electronic platform and received a notification that your application was rejected, but you disagree with their decision, you have the right to appeal within 30 days, but not exceeding 90 days. Follow these steps to exercise your right to appeal:

First, make sure that the information you provided to SASSA on the SRD DSD Appeal Electronic Platform is complete and correct.

If necessary, update your contact information using this link.

Accurate contact information is vital in the event that your appeal is successful because the Independent Tribunal will direct SASSA to initiate payment of the Covid-19 SRD directly to you.

After updating your information, if necessary, click “Save,” and then you will be redirected back to the SRD DSD Appeal website to continue your appeal.

You or your proxy must confirm that you have read and accepted the Declaration and Consent Documents’ clauses.

Click “Submit,” and you will receive a confirmation message indicating that your application was submitted successfully.

Please note that an appeal application must be lodged for each month in which SASSA rejects your application if you disagree with their decision.

The Independent Tribunal will electronically notify you of the outcome of your appeal within 60-90 days of lodging the appeal.

The Independent Tribunal’s decision is final, and no further internal recourse is available to unsuccessful applicants. However, if you are not satisfied with the Independent Tribunal’s decision, you may approach the High Court for judicial review within 180 days.
