The Christ Congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) has begun its golden jubilee celebrations in Mile 50, a Koforidua suburb.
The theme of the year-long celebration is “Maintaining a Peaceful Society as a Way of Manifesting God’s Glory,” with the climax scheduled for August of next year.
Reverend Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, former General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, preached the sermon at a special church service dubbed traditional wear day and homecoming.
Respect, language, dress, and fellow feeling are not fetishes, but God-given stars that guide us to our destination, and every Christian should be concerned about how we are losing touch with our culture and traditions.
He stated that Christians should not push culture and traditions to the sidelines in the name of Christianity and modernity because if we miss our star of direction, we will miss our destinations.
“Speaking your language, dancing to traditional drums and songs, paying homage to your family and clan elders are all part of our treasured traditions, which must not be viewed as a fetish but as our identity through which we worship God fully.”
“God can use individuals around us to lead us to our safe destinations, and we must be humble enough to appreciate whatever roles others play in our lives,” he said. “The star of God directing us to our destinations may not be unique or magical as the one which led the shepherds at the time.”
Congregants, including clergy, dressed in various traditional garb and participated in dancing to the sounds of traditional drums and melodies during church services, which was done to the glory of God.
As the president of the Alliance for Christian Advocacy in Africa (ACAA) and a Presbyterian Minister, Reverend Opuni-Frimpong stated the wish that Christians would respect traditions because “they are like stars guiding us to our destinations.”
