Do you know when you should apply for maternity pay?

As a working mom in South Africa, you may be entitled to up to four months of paid maternity leave, which can help you take care of your newborn without worrying too much about your finances.

However, in order to claim UIF maternity benefits, you’ll need to complete some paperwork and visit the Department of Home Affairs a few times. Here’s a general guide for new moms who want to apply:

You may qualify for UIF Maternity Benefits if you are a South African citizen with a valid green bar-coded ID book, a foreign national with a valid passport who meets basic criteria, pay UIF contributions monthly, are adopting a child under the age of two, or are self-employed and a member of a Closed Corporation or a Company.

You may NOT qualify for UIF Maternity Benefits if you work less than 24 hours a month for any employer, are a student, work as a public servant, receive a monthly state pension, or only earn commission.

To claim UIF Maternity Benefits, you’ll need to submit eight documents after your baby is born. These include

  • a bank statement
  • an original ID or passport or a certified copy
  • banking details and a completed form UI-2.8, a completed UI-2.7 form from your employer
  • a completed UIF Maternity Benefits application form (UI-2.3)
  • a medical certificate or your baby’s birth certificate
  • a completed follow-up form (UI-4) to ensure the continuation of payment.

To claim your benefits, you’ll need to go to your nearest labor centre and submit the required documents. Compensation typically ranges between 38% and 58% of your gross monthly salary, and new moms can receive between one and four months’ salary for every six months worked.
