Comrades Runners Congratulated on their Achievement

In a display of remarkable spirit and endurance, Team UKZN has emerged triumphant at the 92nd Comrades Marathon. The university community has reason to celebrate, as its students, staff, and alumni have distinguished themselves as outstanding ambassadors for UKZN.

Dr. Albert van Jaarsveld, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, expressed his heartfelt congratulations to all who participated in the marathon. He applauded the runners’ unwavering commitment and dedication to compete in one of the world’s greatest marathons, calling it “admirable and inspiring.”

The UKZN Athletics Club made a notable contribution to the university’s impressive showing, with a high number of runners participating. Out of 17 registered UKZN runners, 13 finished within the 12-hour mark, with Mr. Gcino-Fuze Ngcobo among the first 1000 runners to cross the finish line.

Mr. Nkeka Tseole, one of the university’s seven first-time Comrades runners, earned a Bill Rowen Medal for finishing within the first nine hours. Meanwhile, long-standing staff member and Council member, Mr. Tony Singarum, completed his 22nd Comrades marathon with flying colors, setting an example for all runners. Another UKZN alumnus and Council member, Mr. Sammy Mashita, proudly earned a bronze medal for his efforts.

The runners’ motivations varied, with some striving for personal achievement, others raising funds for their communities, and still others running to honor loved ones. The student and staff volunteers who woke up at 3 am on Sunday to cheer on the runners and distribute refreshments were also thanked, as were the Health Sciences students who provided free physiotherapy services.

Dr. van Jaarsveld encouraged all students and staff interested in running to join and train with the UKZN Athletics Club. For more information, they can contact Leigh Anne at 031 260 2281 or [email protected].

In conclusion, the University of KwaZulu-Natal is immensely proud of its participants in the Comrades Marathon and thanks them for their outstanding representation.
