Calculating Grade 12 Final Marks

Calculating your Grade 12 final marks involves taking into consideration your School-Based Assessments (SBA) as well as your final examination marks. Here is a breakdown of how it is done:

25% of your final mark is based on your School-Based Assessments (SBA). The remaining 75% of your final mark is based on your final examination marks.

Your School-Based Assessments comprise of: Oral presentations, Assignments, Class tests  and Trial examinations.

Reviewing Your Matric Pass Levels

If your Matric Certificate indicates that you have received one of the following pass levels, it means that you have passed your Matric. The pass levels are arranged from highest to lowest as follows:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree Pass
  2. Diploma Pass
  3. Higher Certificate Pass
  4. National Senior Certificate Pass

Requirements for a Bachelor’s Degree Pass Level:

  • you need a minimum of 40% in your home language
  • you need a minimum of 50% in four subjects
  • you need a minimum of 30% in two other subjects

Requirements for a Diploma Pass Level:

  • you need a minimum of 40% in your home language
  • you need a minimum of 40% in four subjects
  • you need a minimum of 30% in two other subjects

Requirements for a Higher Certificate Pass Level:

  • you need a minimum of 40% in your home language
  • you need a minimum of 40% in two subjects
  • you need a minimum of 30% in four other subjects

Requirements for a National Senior Certificate Pass Level:

  • you need a minimum of 40% in your home language
  • you need a minimum of 30% in two other subjects
  • you need a minimum of 30% in three subjects
  • You can fail one subject.

Examining Your Matric Symbols

Understanding your Matric results and the levels of marks you have attained can be done by calculating your APS score. This score is determined by the marks you received in your results.

Here is an example of how to calculate your APS Score:

If you want to determine your APS Score, you’ll need to follow these steps:

  • For English First Additional Language, a score of 64% equals 5 points.
  • For isiZulu Home Language, a score of 72% equals 6 points.
  • For Physical Sciences, a score of 66% equals 5 points.
  • For Life Sciences, a score of 81% equals 7 points (which is considered a Distinction).
  • For Geography, a score of 56% equals 4 points.
  • For Mathematics, a score of 73% equals 6 points.
  • Note that Life Orientation is not included in APS calculations.
  • To calculate your APS Score, add up the points you earned for each subject: 5 + 6 + 5 + 7 + 4 + 6 = 33.
