Adjei Kojo Residents Demand Reopening of Public Toilet.
The closure of a public toilet that once helped to combat open defecation in Adjei Kojo, in the Tema West Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, has left residents feeling anxious and unhappy.
A recent visit to the facility, located just a few meters from the Adjei Kojo Lorry Station, revealed that it has been closed for approximately six years. This has forced community members to question why the facility has been left unattended for years, with no other option but to walk quite a distance to access private toilet facilities.
The residents have called on the authorities to address the issues preventing the public toilet’s proper functioning and ensure it is reopened without delay. Mr. Joseph Anloadey, a resident, explained that the facility was functional until it was reconstructed into an ultramodern one. However, it was closed down after about a month due to poor construction works and leakages. He added that the situation has forced some residents to pay higher fees to access private toilet facilities or find other alternatives.
Another resident, Mr. Oliver Addison, expressed his belief that political expediency may be behind the closure of the facility. He explained that one administration may construct a facility, but the succeeding administration may refuse to continue with or manage the project. He admitted that the facility was beneficial and served a vital need in the community, and its closure has left many residents feeling inconvenienced.
Mr. Bright Gameli, who operates a shop around the facility, recounted how the public toilet was established to solve a dire need of the residents in the community. He appealed to the Tema West Municipal Assembly to ensure the facility is reconstructed and managed properly to enhance usage and environmental cleanliness.
The authorities should take action to address the concerns of the community and provide them with access to safe and hygienic toilet facilities.
